Dr. Ekzayez's Bio

Dr Ekzayez is a passionate Health System Expert at the Centre for Conflict and Health Research at King’s College London and a founding member of the development firm “Syria Development Centre”. With his extensive experience and expertise in the field, he served as a Principal-Investigator and leading applicant for a number of humanitarian, academic, and policy projects around health, conflict, and development.

Dr Ekzayez’s impressive career includes various academic and consultancy roles with renowned institutions such as the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, American University of Beirut, Chatham House, and Chemonics International. He has also worked with humanitarian organisations like Blumont International and Integrity Global, as well as leading major health programmes for Save the Children International and Expertise France. His involvement in polio eradication programmes, Primary Health Care, health information systems, and health governance initiatives speaks volumes about his commitment to improving healthcare in conflict-affected areas.

Specialising in Health Systems Strengthening, Humanitarian Health, Health Security, Epidemiology, the public health impacts of conflict, and Local Development, Dr Ekzayez is a leading authority on health in complex settings. With a diverse medical background that includes clinical experience in neurosurgery, gained during his medical training program from 2010 to 2013, he is uniquely equipped to understand and address the healthcare challenges in war-torn and fragile regions.


Dr Ekzayez has authored over 40 academic journal articles and four chapter books on topics related to health, conflict, and development solidifying his status as an expert in the field. Apart from his impressive professional achievements, he is also actively involved in various organisations, including being the General Secretary of the Syrian British Medical Society, Deputy Chair of the Syria Public Health Network, Board Member of the Syrian British Consortium, and Trustee at Shafak Syria and Amna.


After receiving his MD from Aleppo University and his MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Dr Ekzayez furthered his academic pursuits by earning a PhD on health systems and conflict from King’s College London. He has also completed fellowships in leadership in international affairs from The Queen Elizabeth II Academy for Leadership in International Affairs at Chatham House, and in international cultural relations from the Institute for International Cultural Relations at The University of Edinburgh.
